Hagia Sophia Museum in Istanbul

Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia Museum in Istanbul

I was really excited when I stepped in this building around 16 years before. I have been there maybe 500 more times after that. I think I still feel the same each and every time I step into the famous nave of the building. It is hard to imagine how people felt when it was comleted in the 6th century A.D.

Amazing Architecture of Hagia Sophia

Can you imagine people coming from their little town or village and having a look at a dome 56 meters from the ground. 32 meters diameter. 40 windows. One whole dome, look like it is hanged on the sky. The chain which holds the dome should be tied to clouds or heaven. What other explanation you can make about a dome without any direct support. Tried for the 1st time for this building.

History of Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia is an incredible building. It was built at 532 to 537 just in FIVE years. It had been the largest temple in the world around 1000 years. It was designed by two important architects of 6th Century A.D. Isidore of Miletus and Anthemios of Tralles.

The emperor Justinian is reported to have shouted "I surpassed you Solomon" when the temple was finished. The largest temple known until Hagia Sophia was Solomon's temple throughout the history.

I recently bought a Tokina 11-16mm AF 2.8 wide angle zoom lens. I had the pleasure of taking pictures of Hagia Sophia. Only disadvantage is the huge scaffolding inside the museum. It has been there for the last 15 years though.

People who visits this place without a knowledgeable tour guide might be disappointed. I have seen many reviews in Trip Advisor saying that Hagia Sophia was the biggest disappointment of their Istanbul trip. Actually it is quite strange not to like such a building. If there was a private tour guide telling them about the famous legends, secrets, riots, mosaics and emperors of the Hagia Sophia they would enjoy much more than that.
